2022 was a fantastic year. I was extremely lucky to attend four separate race meetings during the season. Each was slightly different, and all were at what I consider to be the best circuits in Britain. Additionally, my motorsport photography in 2022 developed further. I took some of my best ever panning shots and found some great new spots to shoot from too.
Masters Historic Race Weekend – Donington Park – April
The year began with the Masters Historic Race Weekend at Donington in April for some retro goodness. The spectacle was great, although the F1 action on the main race day was limited. Consequently, I’d recommend attending the qualifying day for maximum old F1 car activity. In the race, the relatively small field of F1 cars was highlighted when a number dropped out early on. Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to see and hear them in action, and I got to have a good poke around the cars in the pits too.
World Superbikes UK Round – Donington Park – July
I was back in Leicestershire in July on an incredibly hot day for my first World Superbikes race since 2004! And it was worth the wait. Other than the organisers printing a laughably small number of programmes that had all been sold on Saturday, it was an excellent day out. I stayed hydrated, got some great photos, and it was also very pleasing to see WSBK in rude health.
British Superbikes – Cadwell Park – August
After the World Superbikes, the summer of bike action continued. I was finally able to make the pilgrimage to Lincolnshire and Cadwell Park for the August Bank Holiday British Superbikes meeting. This was an event I’d wanted to attend for years, also it was only my second visit to the track. It was as good as I recalled, so I’d very much like to go again in future and do the full weekend, camping at the circuit.
British Touring Cars – Brands Hatch – October
Then, in early October, it was over to Brands Hatch for the final round of the British Touring Car Championship. What an event that was! The title went down to the final race, and Tom Ingram was undoubtedly a deserved winner, he drove like a champion all weekend. Moreover, Brands Hatch in the early autumn was gorgeous (on a dry, sunny day, admittedly!). It was a long old day, arriving a bit after 8am and not leaving till well past 6pm, but totally worth it. And the pit walk was as good as always.
A selection of some of my favourite photos I shot from the four race weekends are below. Additionally, you can view more 2022 motorsport photography and all my others too on Flickr.
